Interview with Benidorm Legend Levi G
When you watch your favourite shows in Benidorm, do you ever wonder about the people behind the costumes? Centrictravel.com will be interviewing some familiar faces from the Bendirom Scene and giving you an insight into the world of Benidorm ’superstars’!
This week it’s Levi G, AKA Wayne the Queens of the Queens!
Wayne was born in Manchester and bred in Knutsford Cheshire. Knutsford also goes by an alter-ego of Cranford in the Elizabeth Gaskell novel and dramatised in the BBC series of the same name.
When Wayne first arrived in Benidorm, like many of us, he did any work that would pay the bills; propping, cleaning, bar work.. infact anything where there was a quid to be made!
Wayne continues “Then one day I bumped into Peter Welsh, who was the pianist from my Butlins days… when I told him what I was doing he went mad and said “where’s Levi? You should bring her back, she was a big hit back in your Butlins days.”
So Levi was re-born..
Levi’s first gig was at the Showboat (which is now the Red Dog).
Wayne remembers ‘”Wages in those days 2000 pesatas, about 8 quid a a show. But as I got more popular on the Benidorm I could up the money at each gig working all the top clubs; Cafe ‘B’, Zodiac, Steptoes 1, Star & Garter and the Mexico Bar.”
You can catch the versatile Levi G show in the Queens Hotel (Benidorm Old Town) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday or at Sandras in the new town Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
Also, a hardworking hotelier, Wayne can also be found every evening warming up the other acts who start every night at 10:30 including: Jenny Renn, Leigh Mayers, Wendy Kane, Scott Micheal and various other guests and touring artists.
So, as a business man and entertainer, how are things affecting you at the moment?
“Well, after a very quiet winter, things are picking up again nicely. I think it’s been a bit of a ‘wait and see’ attitude with the British, especially with the low pound roght now.
“But people who do come have found that there are so many great acts in town and the businesses have all reduced prices so Benidorm is as good value for money as it’s ever been. I try to visit all the other great acts myself from time to time and of course, still have my own bar stool at the bar of Cafe Benidorm!
After so many years performing whats the most memorable moment oon stage?
“Well… that’s a tough one as so many strange things hapen, espcially when you get a crowd of stags who think they are going to abuse a drag queen, they NEVER win.
“The best ever thing was one day I got a standing ovation from a disabled girl, 30 something. Her parents burst into tears as it was the first time in her life she had stood unaided. You just can’t beat memories like that. It makes it all worthwhile.
See you all soon Love Wayne XXX
