Benidorm's commitment to recycling

Benidorm recycles More Than 2 Million Kilos of Glass in 2007

The city of Benidorm continues to strongly support sustainable tourism, proof of this comes in the form of recycling. From January to September of 2007 a total of 2,130,610 kilos of glass have been recycled, 270,280 more kilos than the same time last year. This means that each Benidorm citizen has received an average of 31.5 kilos of glass so far this year.

More than 84 hotel owners form part of the glass recycling campaign focused on the hotel, restoration and catering sectors (HORECA) that are developed in the city.

The citizens of Benidorm have recycled an average of 33.2 kilos in 2006 compared to 38 kilos of glass residuals in 2007, almost five kilos more.

The municipality of Benidorm manages a total of 342 green containers for glass recycling, which is a container for every 197 inhabitants.

Benidorm's recycling programme is not restricted to glass. The water from the municipal swimming pools and pools at hotels which need to be drained for the winter is used to clean the streets of the Old Town and the main Tourist areas.

The Moors and Christians Fiesta - This Week (Sep 2006)

Moors and Christians Fiesta, Benidorm

The Benidorm folk are getting ready for one of the most flamboyant fiestas of the year: The Moors and Christians (Moros y Cristianos) Fiesta. The Moors and Christians Fiesta is celebrated throughout Spain, but mainly in coastal towns where they celebrate ousting the Moors from the Iberian Peninsular.

Work is almost finished on the Castle in the Plaza De Hispanidad (or in front of McDonalds to you), in the Old Town. From here the Christians will fire fireworks at the bearded Moors, who will inevitably loose this battle, yet again!

Get yourselves down to the Square in front of Mcdonalds if you are in Benidorm this weekend and see some of the spectacle for yourselves.

Residential In Tempo Apartments in Benidorm

Residential In Tempo, Benidorm
You might be forgiven for thinking that this building could be somewhere like Dubai, but would you guess that you could purchase an apartment in a development like this in Benidorm? ...with it's magnificent mediterranean views and only 2 hours flying time from the UK.

Benidorm has been criticised in the past for it's high-rise hotels and apartment blocks, some of which, are admittedly quite bland. The reason behind Benidorm's high rise culture is simple. The plan was that each building would have a certain amount of land dedicated to communal areas, gardens and swimming pools, the occupants on the most part would have good views of the sea and they wanted everywhere in the town to be easily accessible... which meant high-rise.

Also, the Spanish don't have the same stigma attached to high-rise building as the British do. To the British, high-rise usually conjures up images of decaying 1960's council flats. But to the Spanish it means clean, modern living, use of a communal swimming pool and large terraces on which to unwind and take in the unobstructed views of the Mediterranean sea.

Now Benidorm really is embracing this high rise culture with such super-structures as the Hotel Gran Bali and this new development: Residential In Tempo.

The building will consist of two towers, each with 52 floors, linked at the top to by a giant cone shaped structure. The towers are supposed to represent the number 11 to remember the victims of the terrorist attack in Madrid, March 11th 2004.

Residential In Tempo will become Europe's tallest residential structure and we hope to see many more developments like this one in the future.
